World Environment Day

World Environment Day (WED) is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. WED activities take place all year round but climax on 5 June every year, involving everyone from everywhere. WED is a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.

The UN General Assembly declared 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), WED has adopted SIDS in broader context as its theme this year. The theme for this year's World Environment Day celebrations is Raise your voice, Not the sea level which is a campaign with a goal of raising awareness about SIDS, their unique development challenges, environmental problems, degradation of natural resources and extreme natural disasters.

The global sea level has risen by 10 to 25 cm in the last 100 years. Sea level is attributable to global warming. Humanity's Green House Gases (GHG) emissions are leading to changes in climatic patterns. The most harmful GHG emitted by human activity, Carbon-dioxide, accounts for 85% of the increase in Earth's temperature in the past 10 years. When you save energy, you reduce the use of fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), the greatest source of human carbon-dioxide input. Simple steps like, switching off lights, switching to fluorescent lighting etc. can help in reducing carbon footprint and thus reduce the rising sea levels.

PRL celebrates this event every year to discharge its Corporate Social Responsibility as a member organization of UN Global Compact. This year WED was celebrated at PRL Korangi on 4th June, 2014. The tree plantation ceremony was held in the area adjacent to plant substation and Managing Director & CEO Mr. Aftab Husain honoured the event by planting a sapling.
